Ed McBain's Cop Hater - Episode One: Pigeon Stools and We Enjoy Apocrypha

Welcome to Hark! The 87th Precinct Podcast.

This podcast was originally presented in two parts, which are now combined:

Part One Information:

"This is the first part of our podcast looking at Cop Hater (1956). Paul, Morgan and Stephen look at Ed McBain's background, what was going on in 1956 and start to set the scene for the book, which will be discussed in more detail in Episode One, Part Two.

Apologies for the crackles which appear on the recording from about 13 minutes in - possible wifi or phone interference - a lesson learned!"

Part Two Information:

"Part Two ("The big bit") is here!

Finally, we get into some detail about the first book in the 87th Precinct series, Cop Hater (1956)! This episode is probably longer than we intend for most of them, but as this is Book One and we're still talking about the genesis and background for the series, well, there you go."

  4. Discovered your show recently when we connected on Twitter. Finally got to listen and am taking myself through from the start. I had no idea anyone was as into the Eight Seven as I am! Great first episode for those of us who haven't read Cop Hater in ages as well as hopefully introducing newbies to the series and to Ed McBain.

Love right near the end where the point is made that at first you think "50 books?!" and it may seem daunting as you consider starting the series, but then at some point you realize 50 isn't enough.

It's part of the huge talent he had as a writer and story teller to create characters we care so deeply about.

I was given the entire show on DVD as a gift so would love to hear you do reviews of those episodes and how true they were to the stories.

And please...once you've finished this series...start a new show about the Matthew Hope series. It will be shorter I know since there are nowhere near as many books, but there's a nice tie-in at the end when FINALLY McBain indulges his audience by connecting the two series to each other.

Great job. I can't wait to listen to them all. You've inspired me to re-read the entire series in order.

    1. Hi! Thanks for your comment and thanks so much for joining us on the journey. Gosh, it feels like a long time ago when we began.

As you listen through you'll find a few bits and pieces about the 87th Precinct television series and a special episode all about "Line of Duty" - the only one that McBain wrote as an original for the show.

I hope you enjoy the shows, it certainly took us a while to settle into the format we're using now, but we've really liked doing it so, I hope you find it fun and informative. It's all about celebration of the great series!

      Best wishes,

      Paul

  5. About as late to the party as possible. Just read Cop Hater, and intend to read the whole series. Found your podcast on Twitter, somehow, and that caused me to finally read Ed McBain. First episode was a good listen, especially since I finished the book only days ago. By the way, I did notice the early "tell" in the story about the jealous husband, and wondered if that would somehow become an element. Overall, thought it read very well given its age, and the absence of cell phones and computers didn't matter.
